MAVERICK'S LIST OF ATARI 7800 VIDEOGAMES
The Atari 7800 was a late 80's system.
Although the 7800 wasn't a bad machine, and
several good games were released for it, part
of it's attraction to today's gamer is that
it plays most all of the original 2600 games
as well as the more advanced 7800 titles.
Aging arcade junkies will be pleasantly
surprised by the faithful 7800 adaptations
of some old arcade classics.
Some of my favorite titles are marked * and
have a brief commentary as to their merits.
B M GAME (MANUFACTURER)
-------------------------------------------------
X X ACE OF ACES (ATARI)
X X ALIEN BRIGADE (ATARI)*
early first person style shooter, light gun
compatible
X X ASTEROIDS (ATARI)*
colorful adaptation with interesting two-player
options
X X BALLBLAZER (ATARI)*
unique and creative game from Lucasfilm
X X BARNYARD BLASTER (ATARI)
X X BASKETBRAWL (ATARI)
X X CENTIPEDE (ATARI)
. . CHOPLIFTER! (ATARI)
X X COMMANDO (ATARI)*
a zillion arcade variations of this one: the
lone commando takes on wave after wave of
enemy forces. I wasn't a fan of too many
of these games, but this has some nice touches.
X X CRACK'ED (ATARI)
X X CROSSBOW (ATARI)
X X DARK CHAMBERS (ATARI)
X X DESERT FALCON (ATARI)
X X DIG DUG (ATARI)
X X DONKEY KONG (ATARI)
X X DONKEY KONG JUNIOR (ATARI)
. . DOUBLE DRAGON (ACTIVISION)
. . F-18 HORNET (ABSOLUTE)
X X FIGHT NIGHT (ATARI)
. X FOOD FIGHT (ATARI)*
run around picking up food and slinging it at
clerks. I never got the hang of this in the
arcade, but it's great fun on the 7800 and
includes the replay feature from the arcade.
X X GALAGA (ATARI)*
an exciting variation on Galaxian and some of
the best audio in a 7800 game.
X X HAT TRICK (ATARI)
X X IKARI WARRIORS (ATARI)
X . IMPOSSIBLE MISSION (ATARI)
X X JINKS (ATARI)
X X JOUST (ATARI)*
if you've forgotten the arcade game, this will
help you remember. Classic battle of jousting
knights flying huge buzzards.
. . KARATEKA (ATARI)
X X MAT MANIA CHALLENGE (ATARI)
. . MEAN 18 GOLF (ATARI)
X X MELTDOWN (ATARI)
X X MIDNIGHT MUTANTS (ATARI)
X X MOTOR PSYCHO (ATARI)*
racing game ala Pole Position but with
souped-up motorcycles.
X X MS. PAC-MAN (ATARI)
X X NINJA GOLF (ATARI)*
odd-ball game combining a "simple" golfing
game and a ninja battle as you make your
way down the fairway to take your next shot.
X X ONE-ON-ONE BASKETBALL (ATARI)
X X PLANET SMASHERS (ATARI)
X X POLE POSITION II (ATARI)*
I played the original Pole Position at least
a million times so I'm glad to have four
tracks to choose from here. TIP: modify a
joystick to have a locking throttle button
or else your thumb will fall off after
three or four laps!
. . RAMPAGE (ACTIVISION)*
another arcade classic: one or two players attack
a city with giant monsters who resemble Godzilla,
King King, and a giant werewolf(?). Fun mayhem.
X X REALSPORTS BASEBALL (ATARI)
. X ROBOTRON: 2084 (ATARI)*
arcade classic where your good-guy robot is in
a room full of bad-guy robots and humans. Shoot
the marauding robots and rescue the humans.
Not for the faint of heart, this great looking
and great sounding game moves fast!
X X SCRAPYARD DOG (ATARI)
. X SUMMER GAMES (ATARI)
X X SUPER HUEY UH-IX (ATARI)
. . SUPER SKATEBOARDIN' (ABSOLUTE)
X X TOUCHDOWN FOOTBALL (ATARI)
X X TOWER TOPPLER (ATARI)*
arcade title focusing on both strategy and
reflexes. Inventive graphic presentation of
you climbing stairs and walking on catwalks
that circle a tower.
X X WINTER GAMES (ATARI)
X X XENOPHOBE (ATARI)*
Not your normal hunt through alien infested
spaceships. This split-screen game allows
two players to do so cooperatively which
adds to the fun.
X X XEVIOUS (ATARI)
